about
The public’s first taste of the new recordings will be ‘Hey Mate’, a timeless “folk song of reflection”, as Wells describes it. The moving song has at its heart both an intrinsically Australian and universal theme – the offering of a shoulder to someone going through a tough time. In the case of ‘Hey Mate’, Wells conveys his deep admiration for a close friend who dealt with his sexuality in a close-minded country town.
Hey mate,
Well I miss you like you were my own blood,
Did you pack enough,
Time away from these old stompin’ grounds?
Have you tried the sardines from that quiet Spanish town?
Hey mate,
Do you remember when we drove that road to St Kilda?
And in the back,
Sat the drummer and the strummer singing vodka songs?
Well they didn’t know what I knew,
You had ventures of your own
When they started talking lovers,
You fell silent at the tongue
Hey Mate! (Whooo), Hey Mate! (Whooo)
Hey mate,
I remember us running once,
Through that, folding crowd
To catch a glimpse,
Of that character Rogers singing, ‘Berlin Chair’
As you looked at me with fear,
Stuttering to explain,
How this wicked world around you,
May never be the same
With a sudden nervous breath you cried,
Something, in me, has changed!
Hey Mate! (Whooo), Hey Mate! (Whooo)
Well, I hope you packed enough time away,
From this old redneck town
When you started talking lovers,
They fell silent at the tongue
Well it must have taken courage,
More than I will ever know
